Transformers toys APC Bulkhead Review

The packaging features Apache’s iconic 2D comic-style artwork, with Bulkhead’s arm transformed into a ball hammer, standing firm and gazing in a certain direction. The quality of Apache’s artwork remains as high as ever. The box is sealed with the familiar silver tape, making it impossible to reseal the toy as new once opened. This is one of the many thoughtful details Apache consistently offers. It really shows their dedication to providing a great experience for collectors of Transformers Prime collectible toys.

The inner packaging uses a foam material, which provides better protection for the toy compared to paper or plastic. Although foam packaging is more expensive, Apache insists on using it, showing respect for both the player and the toy—a spirit I genuinely appreciate. This kind of attention to detail makes it a standout among other Transformers action figures.

The toy includes the Bulkhead figure, a pair of ball hammers, a DreamWorks hammer, a front bumper, and a rear bumper. Special features include the Hammer of Heaven and a Mikaela figure. Apache has nearly included all the weapon accessories related to Bulkhead from the animation, providing a one-stop solution. It’s a great package for fans of Transformers Prime and Transformers toys in general.

Apache’s Bulkhead retains the excellent official mold while making considerable optimizations. Someone told me that this Bulkhead uses the latest modified ABS material, which has strengthened the green and black parts and improved toughness. All the injection points have been carefully treated, preventing whitening or glue overflow. I don’t know much about ABS materials, but this Transformers toys definitely feels sturdier and more comfortable to play with compared to Apache’s previous products. It’s a great example of the quality that can be expected in the world of Transformers action figures.

The head sculpt is of very high quality, faithfully restoring the animated design while enhancing the light transmission of the eyes. Even without eye lights installed, the glowing effect of the eyes is impressive, with the blue transparent part even showing the pupils. It really brings the character to life and adds to the overall appeal of this collectible toy.

The chest design is rich in layers, one of the highlights of the official mold. Apache has added gunmetal gray paint to the abdomen, making the details more intricate. It gives the figure a more refined look and further enhances its resemblance to the character in the Transformers Prime series.

The arm armor retains the spring mechanism, with additional gunmetal gray paint on the upper arms and hands, creating a metallic finish that looks even better than the abdomen. This attention to detail in the design and paintwork makes it a must-have for collectors of Transformers action figures.

In contrast to the robust upper body, Bulkhead’s lower body is relatively “cute.” Apache also added gunmetal gray to the lower legs, maintaining consistency with the upper body’s paint style. It gives the whole figure a balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

The back of Bulkhead has no obvious excess parts, and the waist can be fitted with the rear bumper, enriching the details of the back without looking out of place. It shows the thoughtfulness put into the design to ensure a seamless and appealing look from all angles.

In terms of articulation, the head can rotate horizontally, the arms can rotate vertically, and the arms can be raised sideways. The upper arms can rotate horizontally, the elbows can bend over 90 degrees, but the hands have no articulation. Due to the transformation structure, the waist has no articulation. The legs can kick forward and backward 45 degrees, and the side kick can reach 90 degrees. The thighs can rotate horizontally, the knees can bend 90 degrees, and the ankles have no articulation. Bulkhead’s articulation isn’t great, but considering his chubby design, it’s understandable that his articulation is somewhat limited. However, it still offers enough playability for fans to enjoy posing and interacting with this Transformers action figure.

The original Bulkhead only had one ball hammer, but Apache provides a pair, fully covered in gunmetal gray, greatly enhancing the texture. Apache’s Bulkhead is also the only one on the market with two ball hammers. Although it’s just one more hammer, many manufacturers are unwilling to provide even this hammer, sacrificing player experience to save a bit of cost. So this isn’t just an extra hammer—it’s a sign of the manufacturer’s serious attitude towards players, striving for perfection. In the animation, the hammer also emits blue light. If the manufacturer could add some blue details to the hammer later, the overall restoration would be even higher. It would make this already impressive Transformers toy even more accurate and appealing to fans.

The DreamWorks hammer didn’t appear in the animation, but it doesn’t look out of place when Bulkhead holds it, serving as a significant upgrade in melee weapons. The hammer can be disassembled, with the head transforming to combine with the main body, forming the arm cannon mode seen in the animation. This design not only faithfully recreates the animated form but also enhances playability. Like the ball hammer, if the double cannon could include some blue details, the effect might be even better. These arm cannons can also be mounted on Bulkhead’s shoulders as shoulder cannons. With over three different ways to use a single accessory set, it’s no wonder this DreamWorks hammer is a classic accessory for Bulkhead. It adds versatility and fun to this collectible Transformers action figure.

Another special feature is the Mikaela figure, which can be paired with Bulkhead. While the figure’s details aren’t particularly refined, since the star of this toy set is Bulkhead, Mikaela’s role is more of a finishing touch. It’s better to have it than not.

The transformation process of Bulkhead is very simple and clever, thanks to the excellent official mold. Apache has improved the vehicle mode’s tightness on the original basis, making the transformed vehicle seamless.

Apache’s Bulkhead vehicle mode also underwent extensive color adjustments. The car windows were changed to more accurately reflect the black transparent windows from the original design. The wheels received gunmetal gray paint that better matches the animation and design. The headlights’ color was adjusted to gunmetal gray, black, and silver, and the roof rack was also painted. These paint modifications show the manufacturer’s dedication.

The front bumper has an added accessory, which perfectly covers the robot mode’s legs and recreates the four bright silver fog lights from the animation. This improves on the shortcomings of the original mold.

The rear bumper also has added accessories, altering the original mold’s rear bumper design while adding red taillights. The inclusion of both bumper accessories further enhances the vehicle mode’s completeness.

Combining the arm cannon and ball hammer and mounting them on the vehicle mode adds a huge thruster to Bulkhead’s vehicle mode, providing a storage solution for the accessories.

In conclusion, this Apache Bulkhead, while continuing the excellent official mold, has undergone extensive mold and paint optimizations, with more accurate paintwork and a full set of accessories. It has excellent playability and is the most complete and accurately painted Transformers action figure of TFP Bulkhead to date. This Transformers toy is truly worth recommending!

That concludes this review. Thank you for watching. See you next time!
